Quentin Highmore Mood Board

Because Claudia has a last name, I couldn't not give Quentin one. I gave him the last name of Highmore, because Freddie Highmore plays Norman in Bates Motel.

I always try to make my mood boards tell a story. Here I have included a quote that Freddie Highmore says in Bates Motel. Because Quentin is Claudia's imaginary boyfriend and she changes back and forth into him, I have included similar images to Claudia's mood board. I have chosen to use a knife and a phone because in my series, these are the murder weapons that Quentin kills with. There is a wig because thats the main element of the transformation from Claudia to Quentin. The bandages are made out of bed sheets that Claudia uses to tie Quentin up, in the basement as you can see in the picture, the bandages leave the red marks and bruises on his wrists.

Claudia Bates Mood Board

This is my mood board I have created for Claudia, I aimed for it to tell a story. Claudia is schizophrenic and has split personality disorder as you can see through the pictures and symbols. She beats Quentin up, but because she is Quentin she is beating herself up. When she plays Claudia she conceals her bruises and cuts, hence the concealer. The colour green resembles her jealousy (green-eyed monster). The secret is, she was having the affair and got pregnant, who is born to be Norman Bates...

Claudia and Quentin Presentation

Being a shy person, I knew I wasn't going to be very confident doing the presentation. I never have been great at speaking in front of groups of people. However, I had lots of practice, I brought my notes with me to read from so I didn't have my back to the audience and I got my ideas across which everyone seemed to be interested in. The only negative feedback I got was that I was a bit speedy when reading through it. I will take this on board and, in future will slow down and pause at every full stop.

Quentin

"Being Claudia's boyfriend/split personality he occasionally helps out at the motel but mainly gets shouted at by Claudia for supposedly cheating on her with the neighbour, Mrs Laderman.
I will need to show the strain and affect that Claudia's accusations has put on him, he is fed up and has had enough of her behaviour.
The audience demographics should feel sorry for Quentin as they know he is innocent but keeps being punished by Claudia. He started off looking like a normal man but as the episodes progressed they can start to see the impact of the emotional and physical damage she has caused him."
As previously mentioned

Quentin has his mouth stitched shut by Claudia, I am going to design different ways of doing this. Quentin's character will need to link to Claudia's, which I will show in my development.

Design 1

For this design, I have done the stitches like crosses. I don't think it looks great, which is why I am going to try another way and maybe see how straight stitches look.

Design 2

I have tried zig-zag stitches but again, I don't think they look very good. However, because Claudia punishes Quentin I have added bruise on his face. I like this idea and will develop it.

Design 3

I prefer the stitches being straight, I am pleased with this design. Although it is simple, I will continue to work on this design throughout my development.

Design 4

I like this design too, it is very similar to the one above apart from the lips are lighter. Again, it is simple but could work well throughout my development.

Hair Design 1

Obviously, I will need to use a wig for the transformation as she changes gender back and forth. So for this design I have created a long-ish hairstyle with straight layers throughout the hair. I quite like this design but I don't know if it will fit my character properly.

Hair Design 2

Again, this hairstyle would be a wig. I have created a messy hairstyle with layers that stick out and a sweepy fringe. I like this design and I think it fits better with my character. I will need to go and find a wig similar to this style.

Claudia

"Claudia is an orphan who recently re-opened the motel, left to her in her parents will. She is schizophrenic and her imaginary boyfriend Quentin is actually her. She changes personalities depending on her hallucinations and moods.
Claudia plays the role of both characters so I will need to change gender and the appearance of them both.
The audience demographics should now have their suspicions of Claudia. She appeared normal to start with but in this episode they will soon realise she has a sinister side. They will finally find out what she has been hiding. "
As previously mentioned

Whilst researching schizophrenia and split personality disorders, I came across 18 year old Layla Warlow who identifies as both genders.
She thought she was transgender but she missed her breasts after two weeks.
She switches between Layton who fancies woman, and Layla who fancies men.
When she is Layla, she is "quieter and more giggly" but when she is Layton, she is a "lad" who is outspoken and loves football.
Relationships for her are 'nearly impossible' as she constantly changes genders.

Information from:

As Layla                                                                   As Layton

I was very excited when I came across this as this is the exact same idea as I had for Bates Motel. I've heard of people with this disorder before but it has been very interesting to learn about and research. It has given me a wider understanding of it and will helpe me with my character development.

Claudia and Quentin are two separate characters for my series, although they are the same person. I want it to be revealed in the final series of season 3, so I need to make sure they are known as two separate people so I have created face charts for Claudia below.

Design 1

I have created Claudia looking quite natural, with dark eyes. I have included the scars on her lips where she stitched Quentin's mouth shut. I quite like this design in the sense that she looks normal, trying to hide and blend in with her disorder.

Design 2

This design is very similar to the one above, but I have made the eyes slightly darker, adding winged eyeliner. I prefer this design to the one above. I will develop this design further.

Design 3

I quite like this design, however I feel like its too sophisticated for my version of Claudia. She doesn't look schizophrenic although she has scars on her face. I have covered them too well meaning the viewers won't understand that she is actually Quentin. I need to make sure the scars are covered but so you can still see them.

Design 4

Here I have created a messed up version of Claudia, portraying how she feels on the inside. Her eyes have been rubbed and smudged, likewise with her lipstick. However, I feel this would draw more attention to her mental illness and wouldn't blend in well.

Hair Design 1

For this design I have just created a really straight hairstyle that is shiny and sleek. It is healthy looking which is the opposite to her characters behaviour. I like this design however it is too simple for my project. I think I want to create a hairstyle that is a little more natural looking.

Hair Design 2

Here I have created a wavy hairstyle which I really like. It would be created with hair straighteners to give it that beach wave, natural looking curls. I am pleased with this design and will be using it for my characters final design.

Bates Motel

Bates Motel is an American drama thriller TV series. It is a "contemporary prequel" to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho. The series is set in a fictional town called White Pine Bay, Oregon as opposed to the film's Fairvale, California.
I have chosen this series as I wanted to stay away from the typical vampires and werewolves theme and to create something different. I am going to try and portray mental illnesses and disorders through the use of makeup. I am going to create the last episode "Psycho" myself as it is yet to be aired.

Claudia
Claudia is an orphan who recently re-opened the motel, left to her in her parents will.

Bandages
Claudia is constantly paranoid that Quentin is having an affair. She often punishes him and restrains him and restrains him with bandages made from shredded bed sheets from the motel.
Other films that use bandages in horror films are Bandages, 2009 and The Mummy, 1959.
Viewers will see Quentin tied up with bandages in a room where Claudia has got jealous and paranoid and is punishing him.

Quentin
Being Claudia's boyfriend/split personality he occasionally helps out at the motel but mainly gets shouted at by Claudia for supposedly cheating on her with the neighbour, Mrs Laderman.
I will need to show the strain and affect that Claudia's accusations has put on him, he is fed up and has had enough of her behaviour.
The audience demographics should feel sorry for Quentin as they know he is innocent but keeps being punished by Claudia. He started off looking like a normal man but as the episodes progressed they can start to see the impact of the emotional and physical damage she has caused him.

Stitches
I have chosen this word because Claudia stitches Quentin's mouth shut. This will be one of the last scenes in the series 3 episode which will reveal all to the viewers. They will discover this when Claudia has cuts and scars on her lips in exactly the same place that Quentin's stitches were.
Other horror films that use stitches are Stitches, 2012 and Stitch, 2014. This will give me makeup inspiration.
The scene will be in one of Claudia's rooms where Quentin is tied up and being punished. She feels he has crossed the line so she stitches his mouth shut so he cannot kiss or talk to anyone.
I need to practice doing the stitches so they look realistic.

Claudia gets jealous as she thinks Mrs Laderman is having an affair with Quentin, she turns into Quentin who kills when she gets jealous/angry. "Claudia" never kills anyone, its always "Quentin" that does.
As I am going to create the last episode in season 3 "Psycho" myself, I need to make a link between this episode and Alfred Hitchcock's film. The film is a contemporary prequel, meaning there has to be a connection as to why Norman Bates is like the way he is in the 1960 film. I am going to brainstorm ideas of different ways for how Norman can fit in my series.

Makeup and Hair Department for Bates Motel
Cayley Giene            - Makeup effects lab technician (30 episodes, 2013-2015
Donna Bis                 - Key hair stylist (12 episodes, 2013-2015)
Sandy Lindala           - Special MUFX: Lindala Schminken fx (10 episodes, 2013)
Lisa Taylor Roberts  - Key makeup artist (10 episodes, 2013)
Rosa Terracciano      - Assistant hair stylist (9 episodes, 2014)
Stacey Butterworth   - Wig maker (4 episodes, 2013-2015)
Tanya Hudson           - Assistant makeup artist (1 episode, 2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2188671/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm

Above, I have brainstorm ways of how I can connect Bates Motel to the film Psycho. I have may ideas through the motel etc but my main problem is getting Norman Bates known in my series so it follows through to the film. I have come up with the idea that Claudia could be Norman Bates' mother, but then who will be the dad as Quentin is imaginary...?

Character Research

Richard Corson - Stage Makeup

This book is very helpful, especially when it comes to character makeup. It gives you advice and tips to think about when creating character makeup. This is helpful, although it says nothing about the characters that would fit best with Bates Motel, I will still take on board the other factors such as; the character analysis, health, hereditary, race, environment etc. when doing this.

To help me develop these characters further, I am going to analyse the character descriptions and pick out key words that I feel are most important. I am going to start thinking of ideas for them so it will give me an understanding of the characters and how I can place them into my chosen TV series.

Claudia
"Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia's apartment, which is European in style with a great deal of kitsch decor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with every day requirements. She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.

The script portrays her as a psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner. However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers."

We know that Claudia was left alone with little parental guidance. In my series, this because Claudia is an orphan. She developed an unhealthy relationship with horror films and believed this is how life is. She is agoraphobic and psychotic so I wanted to research what it actually like for someone living with these conditions.

Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult, or help wouldn't be available if things go wrong. If someone with agoraphobia finds them self in a stressful situation they will usually have a panic attack.

Psychosis is a mental health problem that causes people to perceive or interpret things differently from those around them. This might involve hallucinations or delusions.
  • Hallucinations - where a person hears, sees and, in some cases, feels, smells or tastes things that aren't there; a common hallucination is hearing voices.
  • Delusions - where a person believes things that, when examined rationally, are obviously untrue.
Claudia often twists her look depending on whatever film she is watching at the time. She could change her hairstyle and clothes to switch around her look. Although she believes horror films are they way life really is, she has a cheery disposition of life. This is because she thinks it is normal, she is so deluded by horror films that it is normal for her to live like that, so it would be cheery for her.

Quentin
"Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don't live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can't get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods. Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of her rooms."

Quentin is her imaginary boyfriend, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. His appearance changes to suit her mood. He is into role-playing to suit her moods. Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and punishes him because of this. This could be because she is psychotic and her delusions are making her believe that he is cheating on her.

Mrs Laderman
Claudia's neighbour in her 40's. She alternately changes into a variety of alter egos and is Claudia's friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia's only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs Laderman has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia

Claudias neighbour/friend/confidant in her 40s. She alternately changes into a variety of alter egos and is Claudia's only link to the outside world. Claudia fears Mrs Laderman fancies Quentin, hence where the suspicions of them having an affair come from. But she really fancies Claudia.

Because Claudia is psychotic and Quentin is her imaginary boyfriend, she could maybe have schizophrenia and split personality disorder where she "role-plays" as Quentin.

My main question is, how I can show insanity and mental illnesses through makeup. I researched the idea and found a website where a makeup artist collaborated with a photographer to produce a series of photographs for "Beauty in Dark Places" They have interpreted the faces that lie underneath the masks we wear as we go about our every day lives.

 Bipolar
 Depression
Schizophrenic
Information and images from: https://gabriellasidhumakeup.wordpress.com/tag/mental-illness/

Although I am not going to portray my makeup in this way, I feel it is interesting to see how other people have shown this through their work. It reveals what could be behind the face they put on. Most people with mental illnesses look like ordinary people and it's not until we see their behaviour or the way the react to certain things that we realise they have a medical condition. It will be very hard to portray this through the makeup but I like to be challenged.
After researching in more depth about the characters I think they could fit into Bates Motel nicely.

Researching Horror TV Series

Below are the 12 TV series we have to choose from. I don't really want to choose the typical vampires and werewolves theme and I know for a fact that I want to create something different and unique. I would love to get an idea that others are fascinated by and in order for me to do this, I need to push the boat out.
  • The Walking Dead
  • American Horror Story
  • Dexter
  • True Blood
  • Bates Motel
  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer
  • Vampire Diaries
  • Penny Dreadful
  • In The Flesh
  • Being Human
  • Hemlock Grove
  • Hannibal
After researching these TV series, the two that interest me the most are Dexter and Bates Motel. I will look into them further to help me decide.

Dexter:
"Meet Dexter Morgan. By day he's a blood splatter pattern expert for the Miami Metro police department. But by night - he takes on an entirely different persona: serial killer. But Dexter isn't your average serial killer as he only kills people who fit a very prolific and precise "moral code" taught to him by his late father Harry (he didn't kill Harry, honest), and developed very thoroughly throughout each kill.."

Bates Motel:
"Bates Motel is a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film "Psycho," and gives a portrayal of how Norman Bates' (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years. Fans discover the dark, twisted backstory of Norman Bates and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is"

I think I will have more ideas for Bates Motel, I have started to think of a few ideas that could potentially work for this series and for this reason, I am going to choose this one to fit in Claudia and Quentin.

Introduction to Claudia, Quentin and Mrs Laderman

Claudia
Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

Quentin
Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don't live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can't get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. John Galliano S/S 2010 "Yesterday Once More"

In our lesson with Fenella, we were getting into the gothic spirit by practicing dark lips and eyes! We chose a couple of pictures of what makeup interested us. I chose John Galliano S/S 2010 "Yesterday Once More"

A trip to Hollywood brought the old memories back, the starlets in old black and white movies were revived by Galliano.

Factors to create this look:
- Curled lashes
- Thin brows
- Silver and gold to light up the inner corners of the eyes.

The eyes are meant to look a bit dirty. Smudge the colours largely from brows eyes to the cheeks. Stars wrapped in caps, some puff-like chignons, covered with nets, accessorised with feathers, pearls, laces, papers, or dried flowers - sprayed with colours.

Unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me, so could only take the photographs from my phone. Meaning that the flash wouldn't obviously work, resulting in the colour pigments and shines not showing up. Because I enjoyed this lesson so much, I stayed on an extra 2 hours and did another look!

Overall, I am really happy with how these have turned out, it was just a shame about the camera not being able pick up the pigments, making the colours look dull.
