Estella has been encouraged by Miss Havisham to "wreak revenge on men" by attracting them and then rejecting them. She is good at controlling them and making them do what she wants. As a child, she uses Pip to practice on as Miss Havisham tells her to "break his heart". She is constantly making nasty comments about his working-class appearance and enjoys making him cry. As an adult she still flirts with men, but she is honest with Pip, she warns him off and refuses to lead him on. This is a hint that she doesn't like being a heartbreaker. Estella doesn't take any responsibility for her behaviour, she blames me havisham "You? I am what you have made me." Later on in the novel she is more open and tells Pip he has a place in her heart, suggesting that she has become a nicer person now she is free from Miss Havisham.
There are many adaptations of Great Expectations and how Estella has be interpreted. Below is photographs I put together of how Estella (young and old) has been adapted and changed in the main films.

There are many ways that Estella can be fleshed out in production such as her background, mannerisms, social class, emotions etc. which is why I have created a brainstorm of ideas, covering these areas to give me a broader understanding of her character and how I want her to be portrayed. I'm still indecisive as to how I want Estella to look, whether I create a younger version or her or older. I have started a few face charts to help me with developing my ideas.
After brainstorming a few ideas, I think I want to create an older Estella, purely because younger Estella wouldn't be wearing much makeup and you can make older Estella more beautiful looking.
Design 1
Here I have created Estella as she is portrayed, beautiful. I have done her with minimal makeup as makeup wasn't really worn much in the Victorian era and most of it was homemade. She looks fresh and natural with rosy cheeks and rouged lips. I do like this design, however because she is portrayed as a beautiful lady I feel it has been created so many times and I want to do something different.
Design 2
I have decided to look deeper into the background and relationship of Estella, understanding why she is the person she is today and what's going on in her life. In the novel, we understand that she is in an abusive relationship. Below, I have created a face chart of the affect that has on her. I am pleased with the idea, I will just need to work on my face chart designs and the placement of the bruises and marks.
Estella has been brought up by Miss Havisham to break men's hearts. She has almost been designed and manipulated into someone she may not have wanted to be. My overall character design will hopefully be recognisable to my potential audience, I want people to look at her and know who she is. But I want my makeup to tell a story, you can look at someone and think nothing, but there is always a story or hidden message through someones face and I want my makeup to show this. That Estella isn't just your normal girl. I would like people to see that I have thought about every aspect of her life and came up with an idea that completely sums up the character.
