Miss Havisham in Contrast

Miss Havisham Before vs After she asks for Forgiveness

In our lesson we worked in a 3 and I created one half of the face whilst Jas created the other half. I created the meaner side of Miss Havisham, where Pip describes her when he sees her for the first time. Whilst Jas created the nicer side of Miss Havisham, where she realises that she hurt Pip and asks for his forgiveness. When we started taking the images at the start we realised something didn't look right and it was to do with the hair. As soon as we took the hair down, I messed up my side whilst Jas smoothed hers down and it made all the difference.

Miss Havisham on her Wedding Day vs Miss Havisham After

Clip I filmed from Great Expectations 2012

I enjoyed the lesson and contrasting Miss Havisham that I decided to create my own face chart of her on her wedding day and her years after she was jilted. Above is a clip from the 2012 film where we see a flashback of Miss Havisham getting ready for her wedding and receiving the bad news from Compeyson. Although we don't have a description of how she looked on her wedding day or know what she would have looked like, this is my interpretation. I imagine her wearing little makeup, just a neutral coloured eyeshadow and rouged cheeks and lips but looking beautiful. Pip gives us a descriptive detail of how she looks years later and this is how I portrayed her. I don't imagine her being really old, when I first read the book I imagined her to be in her late 40's/early 50's. I think the lack of nutrition and vitamins is causing her skin to look far older than she is. I had a lot of fun creating the two sides of Miss Havisham and doing this has helped me have a clear mind that I want to create her after her husband-to-be left her.
